1. The fuel degrades in 6 months time if left sitting. 

2. The storage tanks should be cleaned out every year to insure there is no water, bacteria or fungus build up.

3. It has a cooling system, please do not pour regular green antifreeze.

Steps you can take:

If your diesel drops below 43 cetane (Cetane is to diesel what octane is to Gasoline)your generator will not function. They will also check for water, and contamination. If needed they will clean tanks and filter fuel adding additives that will upgrade the fuel, saving you lots of money needing to dump and replace fuel. Oil in generators has a one year shelf life, this must also be changed, and the antifreeze should be checked and a long life coolant should replace the old conventional coolant it may have. 

Whether its your home were you use this for your family, or your business which will cause downtime. You must have these generators checked prior to the start of hurricane season. Fema requires airports, and service (Fire, Police, etc) to do this yearly, and for good reason. You paid a lot of money for your generator, make sure it works when you need it.
